Mental health- probably the most neglected topic of our times. And this why depression, in India, has become a widespread issue today. Ignoring mental health is the most inconsiderate thing a person can do to himself, however ‘manly’ that might seem. On reading this, you might question… why?

So, let me tell you straight up. It is inconsiderate because ignoring mental health can cause severe long-term repercussions. Some of which might even get over the line and cost you your happiness. Severe depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, acute anxiety, and whatnot are all that people invite into their lives when they decide not to take care of their depression and anxiety in the early stages.

An uncared for issue: Depression in India

Depression, like in most parts of the world, is still the most neglected issue in India. We Indians don’t even consider anxiety and depression real things. Instead, we mistake them for mere overthinking. For us, depression and anxiety are some things that can easily be dealt with and which should never require consultation.

Statistics

WHO states that about 7.5% of Indians suffer from mental disorders and that by the end of 2020, roughly 20% of Indians will suffer from mental illnesses. According to the data, 56 million Indians suffer from depression and another 38 million Indians suffer from anxiety disorders.

WHO also states that the workforce in India is not good enough to handle the spiking numbers of depression and anxiety patients in the country. There is a shortage of credible psychiatrists and psychologists in the country. And comparing the number to the number of people suffering from anxiety and depression in India, the stats are aweful.

In India, we should now give more importance to depression and anxiety than what they have received in the past. This seems to be the only way we can end this strenuous cycle and live our lives happily.
