man fired from job, totally depressed

Unemployment is one grave problem that is threatening people for years.  The present unemployment rate in India is the highest of all the years with several tragic factors contributing to it.

Mental health is as important as physical health, sometimes more than it. It is your duty to protect your mental health from downfall. Causes of mental illness are many, however, unemployment is no less. Research says that it has a substantial impact on mental health. To be honest, this is versa. Having no employment may worsen your mental health and bad mental health can make you lose your job.

The following are the factors that impact your mental health

No source of income:

We are used to money coming and stopping by at our accounts every month, but once unemployment hits, your source of income will be blocked. This may alter every thought of you, one needs to think deeply before spending money. This is also a case of overthinking which leads to stress and depression.

Loss of social relationships:

Once you are out of work, your colleagues and social contacts might also slowly lose touch with you. This leads to the shrinking of social contacts. Few days before you were one among them, and it suddenly feels like an outsider. People going away from you leads to stress.

Stigma and self-esteem:

Society is bound to see the unemployed as a disgrace, it is an established stigma. People alienate them and look down upon them. In this stigma reign, that person is sure to have his self-esteem levels gone down. He will lose confidence and might also think he is fit for nothing.

Standard of living:

With no source of income, your standard of living definitely takes a step down. People tend to make choices that decrease their standard of living. This gives them psychological stress.

All of these factors depend upon the individual’s personal assets, no. of people working in the family, duration of unemployment, and his/her zeal to work.
